Waiting
I was in the middle of making the black raspberry custard recipe that was in this mornings paper when the phone rang. It was the secretary in the office of St. Edwards (where my Dad is). She couldn’t reach my sister so she was calling me to let me know that my Dad was being transported to the hospital. The right side of body was swollen (although how they could tell since he is overweight - so it really must have been). They called his doctor who said to call 911. She told me that he wasn’t uncomfortable. I called one of my brothers who lives in Akron to tell him to go to the hospital and then called my niece, Marie, to get Kitty’s pager number at work. I am sure that St. Ed’s had tried the pager but it is weird ... all you do is dial the number and then enter your number - their is no prompt or anything. I paged Kitty who called back and said she had just gotten the message and was on her way. And so ... 3 hours later I am still waiting - which means I am sure that they don’t know anything and can’t call to update us for some reason. The black raspberry custard didn’t turn out - never firmed up at all so we have sauce we can pour over ice cream. No matter how much you expect these calls you are never ready! I am sure it is some type of congestive heart failure.

My dad does have a clot in his leg so he is being admitted.

Maureen I am overwhelmed for you. Will you be at Kate’s tomorrow? Her mom has agreed to sit for my little gentle one. I still need to figure out something for Jack. If worse comes to worse I can drag him with.

Thinking about you and your family Maureen - keep us updated. Maybe you will know more by tomorrow night at CC, unless you need to drive up to Akron.
We are all back from Minnesota. The reunion was very fine - 28 of us there, only missing my nephew’s 6 year old daughter. (he doesn’t have custody, and Brianna’s mother wouldn’t let her come) We ate, played lawn games, drank sangria etc, played Bingo, took lots of pictures, talked and laughed and just generally had fun from Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon. I drove back yesterday - usual drill - 687 miles in 11 hours, 2 stops.

Custody issues are so sad ... we go through the same thing with our Brianne who is 13 now. It is so good that you have the chance for these reunions.
Apparently the doctors needed a reason to admit my Dad - so the blood clot is it but that doesn’t explain the swelling so they will be doing testing now - calling in a cardiologist.
I will be at Kate’s. We are planning on going to Akron the last weekend in July for a bike ride - for sure now. I am in the panic mode ...realizing that my Dad’s days are numbered (as all of our days are!) This was a real scare for me

Three hours later a doctor finally saw my Dad. They are doing a chest x-ray, leg ultrasound, and blood work. One of my brothers in Chicago actually during the 3 hours managed to call him in his little cubicle in the er. Apparently my dad is in good spirits, no pain and it is just a matter of ruling things out. It was actually a good test of our emergency response/ telephone tree/ how to get hold or people in ER’s
