Carol try to let us know you are ok when you get to high ground. We lived in Chile nine years after the 9.5 earthquake. We saw ships tossed miles inland still not moved. There were frequent small tremblers while we were there. There fortunately won’t be as many deaths because Chile has fairly strict building codes.

pretty interesting day so far - we got an announcement in our hotel room at 5 am about the possible evacuation and at 6 am another one saying that we would be ok on our higher floor. We are on the 22nd floor and when the waves hit we will have a perfect view from our lanai out to the ocean and over to Diamond Head. Lots of things are shut down ... already, about like when there is a blizzard warning. All the beaches are shut down, and there are lots of boats out to sea to be safe from the damage that could be done if they stay in the harbor below us. On tv there is continuous coverage, the waves are to hit in about 3 hours from now. I’ll keep posting with any news! Thanks for your thoughts!!

Update at 3:45 pm Indy time:  This is really something to experience - the sirens are so loud they could wake the dead - they have turned off the elevators in our hotel so that no one becomes trapped if we lose power. The TV coverage is non-stop, and they say that Waikiki is like a ghost town, no one on the streets or beaches. My friend Glor is on the Big Island where the tsunami is first to hit (and the hardest), and I talked to her earlier - she and her husband have been evacuated to high ground. From our lanai we can see the stream of sailboats and yachts continue out to the open sea where they will be safer than in the harbor here. I will post more after the tsunami hits.  It is to hit the Big Island in about 20 minutes, and here in about 45 minutes.  They are just reporting on TV that the tides are doing wierd things already, in indicator that the tsunami is on it’s way.  Coast Guard helicopters are flying up and down Waikiki Beach, warning people (if there still are any on the beach!) to get out of the ocean and head for high ground.
